Potsdamer Platz is a fallow landing the intersection of city and time. It embodies the dead point
in the center, the end of the road, and a desert at the border of history. At the same time, it is the
symbolic place of a new start. Into this void between past and future, helplessness and expectation,
we – the art group von masal – planned to build an installation of specially designed, slightly over
dimensioned chairs and video projects. Each chair stands for a human fate, thoughts, dreams,
expectations, visions and personal history. The chair reflects the expression of a conscious attitude
towards reality and its relation with the past.
We planned to have 400 chairs designed by various artists. A conscious design requires active studies
of the history, present and future of Potsdamer Platz. Starting at the circumference of a circle,
lines of chairs diverge, cross each other, form intersections, ran back to the center: They become the
symbol of a society marked by diversions and contradictions, its members accepting inherent conditions
and limits. The center of the installation is a circle of video monitors. We planned to play video clips
showing human visions of the ideal city in contrast to the real one. The installation at Potsdamer Platz
didn´t materialize for lack of financing options.
