In October 1991 we – the art group von masal and six other artists – performed one day in the
subways number 1, Berlin. The line is as famous as the A train in New York City. It is the most
prominent line that once connected Berlins two-city parts West and East Berlin.
It was our objective to irritate the passengers by stereotyped, strictly synchronized, minimalist
movements in order to interrupt the daily ritual of subway dozing. The group was dressed formally in
black and white, wore striking gold rings, bracelets and golden shoes.
The task was to perform dance like movements with newspapers, monotonous and repetitive,
irresponsive to the passengers and repeat them over and over, apparently without reason.
The performance was recorded with a hidden camera and reveals how the passengers react to the
situation.
