Video is a metaphor. The answer is trivial. Video is trivial, language is trivial, which means it
belongs to the threeway and is available to anybody. In other words: Video is a public place, video
is the point where information streams, signals, perceptions, perspectives and motives meet, it is
no place to rest and place of constancy. It could be compared to modern terminals with landing
airplanes and subterranean trains, where passengers from different cultures meet between supermarket
and hotel, where they pass by or get to know each other, a permanent food for our senses.
The interactive video interior installation City presents a chessboard of acrylic glass equipped
with light barriers. According to the rhythm of the game, several electronic devices are activated
from the board, like cassette recorders, VCRs, lights in different colors etc. These devices tell
about life in the city.
The combination of devices switched on and off gives us permanently changing impression of city life,
always subject to the course of the game. The installation was presented in the Medienzentrum Berlin
in 1992. Parts of it were shown the same year during the HdK-Rundgang (a project in the Berlin
College of Arts).
